Photos and Video

Stephan Michaels was kind enough to share these new photos with us. They were taken in 2005. The first five photos are of Luna. the next two contain the MMFN stewardship base camp and the stewardship vessel. The last three are some of Luna's family, including is brother Aurora (top left), his uncle Hugo (top right) and Skana (bottom left).

These eight photos were taken by Mary B in late September of 2004. Luna spent a few days by the Gold River docks during this time and seemed to be interested in the log boom operations. Thanks Mary!!

The 14 photos below were taken in the summer of 2004. They are copyright Mountainside Films. The first five rows show Luna and his situation in Nootka Sound. The second-last row are photos of the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nations stewardship vessel. The final row contains two photos of Luna with First Nations paddlers, which were taken during the attempted capture of Luna in June. Thanks to Mountanside Films for allowing us to show these!

The following photos are courtesy of the Luna Research Project / OrcaLab. If you require hi-res photos of Luna, please contact Dr. Paul Spong at OrcaLab.

These six photos were taken of Luna, or Tsuux-iit, in early June 2004. He spent most of May away from Gold River Harbour, but for part of June, Luna was around the docks. He has since left the Harbour area.

These two photos were taken in May of 2004 when DFO zodiacs were training Luna to follow them. The photos were taken near the mouth of Nootka Sound when there were reports of orcas in the area.
Here are six photos that provide a better understanding of the Gold River area. In the top left, Luna is visiting the DFO vessel, Atlin Post. Moving down, Lisa Larson watches over Luna from a cliff near Gold River. The top right shows the Henrietta, a research vessel which was used to monitor Luna. Next is a shot of the Gold River harbour (the net pens were located in front of the closest pier; the public docks are beyond the logs towards the back). Finally, a shot of the MV Uchuck III, one of Tsuux-iit's favorite vessels.
These photos of Luna, or Tsuux-iit, were taken in March and April of 2004 by the Luna research team. These photos show Luna around the docks of Gold River. Since these photos were taken, Luna has spent most of his time away from Gold River and away from boats.
This series of photos show parts of Nootka Sound. The Luna research team established a land-based observation station to monitor Luna.

The Henrietta serves as a base station for the Luna research team.

The Luna research team monitors Luna 24 hours a day. Here, you can see David Howitt (top left), Dr. Paul Spong (middle left) and Lisa Larsson (bottom left) in action! There are many more people involved in this successful project who aren't pictured here. These photos are shown to give a perspective on some of the efforts of the team.
