SAVING LUNA is the true story of Luna, a young orca who was separated from his family and tried to make friends with people in Nootka Sound, on Vancouver Island’s West Coast. As most of you know, Luna became famous as the subject of a battle between the Mowachaht/Muchalaht people of Nootka Sound and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans when DFO tried to capture and move him to the waters near Victoria. SAVING LUNA goes behind the headlines to tell the story of the many extraordinary things that happened when an eager young orca broke the wall that normally stands between humans and wild beings.
Here's what the Victoria Film Festival has to say about SAVING LUNA: “The relentlessly engaging story, a true story wrought with drama that Hollywood couldn’t produce on its best days, along with the magnificent quality of the footage, makes this film one of the most moving, interesting, happy and sad films to grace the screen here at the VFF in several years.”
SAVING LUNA has been selected to screen at several festivals throughout North America, including Vancouver, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, and Washington, DC, and the world, including China, Australia and Greece. It recently won Best People and Animals at the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival, and has just been nominated for a 2008 Indie Award for Best Documentary by the Canadian Film and Television Production Association.
